Task 10: Course Feedback

The best, most enjoyable, or most useful part of the module…

The tutorials were very helpful.

The lecturer was enthusiastic and positive about the course material, creating a nice atmosphere for the classes and tutorials.

I found the document design the most enjoyable part of the course and I definitely learned a lot from it.

As a chemical engineering student, I was never taught how to format documents. I found this module very useful in that I learned about the different techniques and layouts for document design. I feel by completing this module that I have a new awareness of information presentation techniques. I hope to apply these theories and principles to any future documents that I am involved in creating.

If I was to change something…

I found that the most beneficial tutorials dealt with the weekly task. I would suggest having optional tutorials where the weekly task could be completed.

Other than that I was very happy with this module.

Task 8: Formatting the Document Design Assignment

My cover page was bright and colourful to establish positive outlook. The coverage and table of contents established my style via font choice, combination and clear visual hierarchy.

Style

The font chosen for body text was Times New Roman. A personal favourite with a moderate x-height for legibility.

The font chosen for headings was Bodoni 72 Bold.

For the font sizing I used the modular scale calculator and chose a ‘golden section’ ratio of 1:1.618. Point 12 was used for body text and point 19 and point 31 for headings. Point 51 was used for the cover page heading.

Single column measurements were used.

The top&bottom and left&right margins were set at 2.54. The text was evenly distributed between the left and right margins. A line space was left for each paragraph.

Charts: Data ink ratio was considered in the construction of  charts

Data ink was minimised

Grid lines were avoided

Tables: Clarity was considered in the construction of tables

Typographic size remained constant

Column or cell colour/size were the same through out.

Minimal inclusion of pie charts

Karen Schriver’s ‘Ten Information Design Principles’ used in my document:

Writing

Writing is accompanied with diagrams and charts making it easier to understand.

Design

All important sections were numbered.

Typography

A typeface with a high x-height was chosen making it readable and easy to see.
